Superintendent of Schools
Dr. Eric Irizarry
Dr. Eric Irizarry brings more than 15 years of experience in educational leadership, with a focus on student achievement, equity, and community collaboration. He stepped into the role of superintendent of Staunton City Schools on July 1, 2025.
Before coming to Staunton, Dr. Irizarry was the Director of Equity, Family, and Community Engagement for Albemarle County Public Schools, leading efforts to strengthen community partnerships, boost attendance, and expand academic access for underserved students. He previously served as principal of Charlottesville High School, where he helped the school achieve its highest-ever graduation rate of 96% and increased participation in AP and dual enrollment programs.
Dr. Irizarry began his career as an elementary school teacher and later held assistant principal and principal roles in Wilmington, North Carolina. He holds a doctorate in educational leadership, a master’s degree in school administration, and a bachelor’s degree in physical education, all from the University of North Carolina Wilmington. He is also a graduate of the Virginia Tech Aspiring Superintendent Program and the AASA Urban Superintendents Academy at Howard University.
In addition to his work in K-12 education, Dr. Irizarry has served on the President’s Council on the University of Virginia (UVA) and has taught as an adjunct professor at UVA and UNC Wilmington.
He enjoys hiking, biking, fishing and camping with his wife, Raven, and their two young sons, often exploring the trails and beauty of the Blue Ridge Mountains.
