Academic Calendar Changes
The School Board approved a calendar update that converts two upcoming teacher workdays into regular school days.

Monday, February 16 and Monday, April 20 will now be school days for students.

This change will add a couple of days back to our calendar this spring, give us some breathing room in the event of additional weather-related issues this winter, and hopefully prevent us from having to extend the school year.

And finally, to start the week on a positive note, Monday, February 16 will also be our rescheduled Kindness Day. Students and staff are encouraged to wear their Kindness Matters shirts and help us celebrate the caring spirit that defines Staunton City Schools.

Prep for Winter Storm & Free Meal Bundles for Familes
With winter expected to hit hard this weekend, we want to keep you informed and help you prepare.

Our team is closely watching the forecast and coordinating with our partners in the city.

If the weather forecast holds, we expect multiple-day school closures.

The SCS Nutrition Services Department will provide free 4-day meal bundles, which include breakfast and lunch, on Friday, January 23, ONLY to support families at risk of food insecurity during school closures. Learn more at the link.

Thankful Food Drive Runs Nov. 3-14
All of our schools are collecting ready-to-eat, non-perishable foods such as granola bars, nut butters, protein packs, fruit cups, trail mix, and cheese crackers. No canned foods, please. Donations will go directly to students and families who could use them most.

✅ HOW TO DONATE: Drop off items at your child’s school during office hours. The public may drop donations at Dixon Educational Center between 8:30 AM and 3:30 PM, and anyone can make a financial contribution to the drive here.

We are United in Kindness in October
The Kindness Matters campaign has launched for the 2025–26 school year!

October is National Bullying Prevention Month, and it also marks the "kickoff to kindness" in SCS.

We’ll celebrate what it means to be United in Kindness throughout October, with lessons in compassion and anti-bullying throughout the month.

We'll also celebrate our first Kindness Day on Friday, Oct. 10 and Unity Day Oct. 22. We encourage all students and staff to wear their Kindness Matters shirt on Oct. 10 and wear orange on Oct. 22!

Garden Coordinator

One of our amazing Bessie Weller Elementary School instructional assistants and the Bessie garden coordinator, Bree Hersch, is thrilled about the gardening season! Beets, carrots, and other veggies are in the soil and sprouting. Soon, our students will be cultivating the garden. Bree is excited to teach our little ones about native flowers and plants this spring, too. Stay tuned for more updates coming soon on what's happening in the Bessie Garden!

Student Teacher Breakfast

This morning, we had the pleasure of hosting a breakfast to honor our student teachers for their contributions as we near the end of the school year. We are proud to have welcomed 26 student teachers from James Madison University this semester. Witnessing the passion and enthusiasm of so many aspiring teachers is inspiring, and we are excited to see what they will accomplish in the future! #futureteachers

Ware Elementary Music March Madness

Our schools are always alive with the sound of music. However, we had even more reasons to celebrate music education during Music in Our Schools Month. We witnessed how high-quality music education positively affects our students' critical and creative thinking, social skills, and learning experiences.

Ware Elementary held a Music March Madness contest, and Bessie Weller's fourth and fifth graders performed an exceptional instrumental concert with international music.

Our middle and high school music programs achieved remarkable successes this month:

Bessie Elementary School Visit

The men's basketball team from Mary Baldwin University has been making visits to Bessie Weller Elementary School throughout the school year. During their visits, they spend time with the students and volunteer on the Weller Woods outdoor nature trail. This week, they shared stories from their championship season, inspiring our students with their perseverance and determination in the face of challenges. They also connected these lessons to academics, leaving a lasting impression on our students. We are so grateful for their support and willingness to take time from their busy schedules to spend valuable time with our students!

Staunton City Schools cares about our students, families, and our community's health and wellness. As you know, there are several required vaccinations necessary for school attendance. Please review the attached document for more information.

ARP ESSER III Plan

On April 21, 2021, the U.S. Department of Education issues an Interim Final Rule (IFR) on ARP Act ESSER III funds. The IFR was effective immediately and has the authority of law. The IFR requires that each LEA that receives ARP ESSER III funds must submit a plan that describes how it will use ARP Act ESSER III funds.
