What Families Experiencing Homelessness Need to Know
- Children who are experiencing homelessness have the right to attend school.
- You do not have to have a permanent address to enroll in school.
- Your child has the right to attend the last school attended before becoming homeless (called "school of origin"), if determined to be in your child's best interest.
- Your child has a right to transportation to and from their school of origin.
- Children who are homeless have the right to immediately enroll in school.
- Lack of enrollment documents, health records and past school records are not barriers to immediate school enrollment.
- School Personnel and the Homeless Liaison will assist you in getting these documents.
- If there are any disputes about enrollment, you must be provided with written explanation and a right to appeal.
- Unaccompanied youth have these same rights.
