Home Instruction
Home Instruction
The Staunton City School Board recognizes that when the requirements of Va. Code § 22.1-254.1 are complied with, instruction of children by their parents is an acceptable alternative form of education under the policy of the Commonwealth of Virginia. Any parent of any child who will have reached the fifth birthday on or before September 30 of any school year and who has not passed the eighteenth birthday may elect to provide home instruction in lieu of school attendance.
As summarized on the Virginia Department of Education Home Instruction web page, the Code of Virginia requires families who choose home instruction to provide their local school division with the following:
- Evidence of having met one of the criteria for providing home instruction
- A Notice of Intent to provide home instruction
- A list of the subjects to be studied for the coming year, and
- Evidence of academic progress at the end of school year, by August 1
For more information, please also review Staunton City School Board Policy LBD - Home Instruction.
Staunton City Schools allows home instruction students in grades 6-12 to enroll in our schools on a part-time basis. For more information, please see Staunton City School Policy JECB - Admission of Non-Public Students for Part-Time Enrollment.
