This course is an introduction to Civics and Economics. This year students will be studying the importance of good citizenship and the basics to understanding how our government functions.

Textbooks used:

            Civics in Practice: Principles of Government and Economics- Holt McDougal (primary  textbook)

            We the People: The Citizen and the Constitution- Center for Civic Education

            American Government: Freedom, Rights, Responsibilities- Steck-Vaughn

            Economics: Concepts and Applications- Steck- Vaughn

Each student will receive a copy of Civics in Practice and a CD of the book upon request (please see note on signature form).  Textbooks/CD’s must be returned at the end of the semester or a fine will be issued!  Students are also expected to maintain a notebook which will act as an important learning tool.  Some material provided in class will be covered in more depth than the textbook supplies- students are expected to study their notes as well as use the textbook! 

Course Objectives: Virginia Standards of Learning CE.1a- CE.14.   All of the objectives are listed at the end of the course outline. SOL’s will be referenced throughout the course outline. Please note: Students will be taking an SOL test in January covering this material.

Goals of the Civics/Economics Curriculum: The student will be able to:

  • Demonstrate knowledge of the foundations and processes of American constitutional government.
  • Explain the process of becoming a U.S citizen and describe the rights and duties they have as citizens.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of the economic process and U. S. economic policies.
  • Be able to interpret maps, charts and graphs and analyze political cartoons.
  • Be able to analyze historical data, develop historical comprehension skills, and interpret primary and secondary source documents.
